Join the National Parks InstaMeet Movement

Have you ever been on a tour and wanted to stop to capture the moment with your lens? But then you feel slightly guilty for holding up the rest of the group, so you shy away from the opportunity? One free application is changing the game for those of you who’ve been in this predicament.

Since 2010, Instagram has taken the digital generation by storm, allowing users to post and share their photos with friends worldwide. More importantly, the platform has made it easier than ever for users to discover photos under common phrases, names or activities with the infamous hashtag (#).

A few creative employees at Glacier National Park have taken advantage of this digital trend and created a program for both amateur and experienced photographers alike. The new initiative, appropriately coined #FindYourParkInstaMeet gives photo enthusiasts their opportunity to set up shop and snap away during a scheduled time and place. Not only have the events been well attended, but it also creates a dialogue between nature and photography enthusiasts that would otherwise be difficult to cultivate.

The InstaMeet idea has quickly spread throughout the national parks system, which now includes Yosemite NP, Channel Islands NP, Everglades NP and dozens more.  Events are typically posted on the National Park Service Facebook page or the individual parks Facebook page with a park ranger assigned to each event.
